Our Beginnings
“The kāhu in the sky, represents the history and knowledge left to us by our ancestors & the importance of whakapapa.”
— Darcy Nicholas

In 2016, driving south from Hawke’s Bay, Amelia and Bill Trotter were accompanied by kāhu — swooping and gliding before their car as if guiding the way. When they reached Reikorangi, Amelia stood upon a ridge and asked for a sign. A kāhu appeared, circling silently overhead.
Their young daughter, recalling the story of Romulus and Remus and how the founding of Rome was foretold in the flight of birds, saw a deeper meaning. That inspired Te Kāhu Tiu — a kaupapa to help rangatahi remember who they are, by providing the uplift to support them as they learn to fly with wings that lift generations and us all.
